Caller: 42-year-old woman calling for 22-year-old son-in-law
Problem: Oxycodone addiction
Seeking: Non 12 step rehab, outpatient program/possible inpatient facility
Reason(s): Caller says that her reason for reaching out for help is two-fold. One is to get the information off her chest and the other is to ask for advice. Caller says she suffers from chronic pain due to a car accident she suffered years ago and was prescribed oxycodone as a result. It was not until a few months ago that she noticed that she was “missing” oxycodone pills; a few at first but it gradually became more of a problem. Caller states that she noticed her 22-year-old son-in-law was taking some of her oxycodone pills for recreational use. After she talked to her son-in-law without involving her husband, she found out that he had recreationally been using opiates and had built up a tolerance, requiring more pills but not having the funds to pay for them. That is the reason that he started taking her oxycodone pills. After talking to her son-in-law, they both decided that it would be best if he were to attend a traditional 12-step program, but he quit after two meetings saying “No one is doing anything except sit around and talk about how miserable they are.” She is interested in learning more about outpatient treatment because she does not want her husband to find out about the problem, but she also made it clear that she understands with oxycodone use, detoxification and inpatient treatment may be in order depending on the severity of the addiction.
