Woman Seeking Advice On Dealing With Elderly Mother’s Vicodin & Oxycontin Addiction

Caller: Woman calling on behalf of her 68 year old mom

    Problem: Vicodin and Oxycontin addiction

Seeking: Rehab options that includes a detox, any other alternative options

Reason(s): Woman says that she is worried about the behavior of her 68-year-old mother and fears that she may be struggling with an addiction to Vicodin and Oxycontin. Even though she is not entirely sure how the addiction got started, she does know that when the caller’s father died years back from cancer, her mother went through a period of depression. She knows that her mother originally received pain pills from doctors for her arthritis in her knees and hands, but does not know exactly where the rest of what she is taking is coming from. The daughter is genuinely worried that an overdose of Vicodin and Oxycontin could lead to her mother passing away in her sleep. She told me that she saw all the pill bottles in her mom’s cabinet and has tried throwing them out, but the mom now locks them up and hides them from her, preventing her from doing anything. The daughter is now feeling hopeless, realizing that after-all, she is her mother and her own person, but the daughter still wants to protect her and do what is right for her. Caller asks if there is any way that her mother could be forced to detox against her will and if not, what other alternatives may be available.

One Response to “Woman Seeking Advice On Dealing With Elderly Mother’s Vicodin & Oxycontin Addiction”

    1. It’s great to hear that the daughter wants to find help for her mother. It is always best to get the addict up to deciding they need help so that the rehab stay goes well and she is determined to get through it. I’ve seen forced situations go badly and the addict just get worse so they can feel in control of the scene. Hopefully a family or professional intervention can take place to get the Mom to see clearly how much she is loved and be willing to get help at a good, natural rehab center…these have the best care and successes. Good luck!

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
