Caller: 18-year-old calling about his younger brother
Problem: Addiction to inhalants
Seeking: Help with options for inhalant abuse
Reason(s): An 18 year old brother is requesting more information about the potential side effects of abusing inhalants after realizing that his younger brother is struggling with a dependence on them. He said he initially found out about his brother’s inhalants use when he found his brother stumbling through the living room when their parents were gone. Caller said, “it was almost like he was totally out of it, he seemed dizzy, had a serious lack of coordination, and he was slurring his speech, noticeably. I thought he was drunk at first. You know, like he had gotten into our parents liquor cabinet, but it turns out that this was not the case at all.” He said he found two bottles of “video head cleaner” in his brother’s room after searching later that night. Caller said, “That sort of tipped me off, he doesn’t even know what a VHS is, so why would he need that type of product, you know? I did some research online and found out that the products are dangerous when used over a long period of time, so I really just want some idea of what to do next.” He is requesting more information about inhalants and asking for more information on how to address the situation with either his brother or his parents.
