Father Seeks Treatment For Teenage Daughter Struggling With Alcohol Addiction

Caller: Father calling on behalf of 17-year-old daughter

Problem: Alcohol addiction, dangerous consumption methods

Seeking: Alternative to 12 step rehab program

Reason(s): Caller is worried about his daughter’s alcohol consumption and in particular about the perceived method of consumption. His daughter is not only underage and in high school, but he worries because she and her classmates are not drinking the alcohol, but they are putting it into their bodies by soaking tampons in vodka, whiskey, or whatever they can get their hands on. He read a report that by doing this, not only does the alcohol go directly into the blood stream, but parents are also unable to smell it on their child’s breath. Caller states that he is worried that there is really no way of knowing if his daughter has had too much alcohol, until she shows signs of alcohol poisoning. The father states that he feels his daughter desperately needs help, realizing she is experimenting with drinking and trying the new fads to fit in with her friends, but he is worried about possible health problems and experimenting with other substances later on. Caller states, “I want to help her before things escalate into worse substances.” Caller states that he has tried grounding his daughter but she simply leaves anyway. He is worried about involving law enforcement because the last he would want to do is have her taken out of their home. He wants options that don’t include the traditional 12 step programs, although treatment in an outpatient rehab would be helpful.

    1. Wow, I’m shocked to hear of this new method/fad. Thank goodness the father found this out. I think it’s smart to look for the better non-12 treatment so that his daughter can get away from these influences and become her own person again.

    2. My gosh, I remember the days of high school and having some drinks at the football games or occasional parties, but also not letting peer pressure get the best of me. I kept my integrity and only did what I wanted and it did not lead to addiction. I wish all our teens would be that strong, it would be a whole different society today if so. Parents please teach children now how to be their own person, what the long term effects of this kind of behavior are, and that they are important in our lives and deserve to achieve goals and be happy in life.

    Most Insurance Accepted

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
