Caller: 27-year old man calling on behalf of his girlfriend
Problem: Alcohol addiction
Seeking: Non twelve step rehab program, alternative options to religion based
Reason(s): The man states that he was concerned that his girlfriend, going through nursing school at the time, was unable to deal with the stress caused by her education. The caller said, “I think that part of her was unable to let the job go, she knew that it would be competitive, that whether she was selected and got to go where she wanted depended on how well she did. This meant that even on the weekends when she’d have three days off in a row, she would be unable to let the education go.” The man believes this is when she started drinking, in order to be able to ‘let go’ and sleep. The man states that what turned into a few martinis when going out to dinner eventually became a bottle of wine before bed. The caller stated, “Alcohol became something she needed in order to unwind, not something that she wanted, but needed. That is when I realized that something was going wrong here, that something was out of place.” According to the man, now that she has almost completed her nursing program, he felt comfortable confronting his girlfriend about this problem. Both parties agreed that change was needed and she is open for a treatment program as long as it does not involve religion or the traditional twelve steps.
