Estranged Brother Hits Bottom From A Longstanding Cocaine Addiction

Caller: 39-year old man calling on behalf of his brother

    Problem: Cocaine and heroin addiction

Seeking: Long term inpatient care specializing in cocaine and heroin addiction

Reason(s): The man said that he had not talked to his brother in more than a decade, but when the phone rang and heard his voice, he knew what was going on. The man said, “When my brother called, the first thing I heard was him saying ‘I lost everyone who cared about me’ and then I heard him just sob and cry for a good minute or two.” The man states that his brother has been struggling with cocaine addiction for the better part of a decade, and has alienated all his friends and remaining relatives because of the abuse, erratic behavior, and financial demands. Caller said, “When my parents died, I know they were embarrassed of his behavior, it was just something that has had a tremendous impact on our family. He lost his financial advisor job and has since worked part-time jobs to get money, he has lost his fiancé because he would leave for days at a time, and he literally has nothing left.” According to the caller, the brother’s realization that he may have hit rock bottom is the final straw that caused him to reach out. He stated, “He might have finally realized that he has nothing left in the world except for one family member. The fact that he reached out makes me want to do what I can to help him get to where he needs to be.” He said he wants a long-term inpatient facility that has a focus on cocaine and heroin dependence.

    1. make sure the brother ain’t just giving a sob story. this one sounds familiar – cry for help, can i bunk for a while, i need some cash, etc – the next thing you know, your flat screen TV is gone, along with expensive stuff, some stashed cash, everything else. don’t listen with your heart – listen wisely. cuz your brother doesn’t need you – he hates you! cuz you’ll talk some shit out of him. but he has to pretend some just so he’d get today’s food & fix. tomorrow, he’d be off partying with friends “who are like brothers and sisters to me, real family, the understand me, accept me for who i am…” stuff like that. stupid but true. i should know! be tough on this matter. what your brother needs is hardcore rehab and not just love!

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
