Man Seeks Help For Brother With Alcohol Addiction

Caller: 23-year old man calling on behalf of his brother

    Problem: Alcohol addiction

    Seeking: Inpatient, alternative rehab treatment

Reason(s): The man says that he watched his brother slowly but surely spiral down into alcohol addiction, without ever truly realizing the impact that it might have on their lives. The man said, “He was never a happy kid, always grumpy about something and always complaining that something was unfair. We had offered him help with his drinking before, but he always refused.” He believes that his brother originally self-medicated with alcohol, but that it has since become a serious issue. He said, “I know him, even if alcohol was not so difficult to withdraw from as it apparently is, he would never be able to do it on his own. He needs professionals there who can guide him, which is why I am having this conversation with you before I am going to have the final sit-down conversation with him.” He said that though he appreciates the difficulty in withdrawing from alcohol addiction, realizing that it might even be physically dangerous for his brother if he decided to stop drinking without medical supervision, “He is a massive pain in my butt, but obviously I do not want him to die. This is why it is important that we get him the best possible options, other than AA model, to offer a real chance for recovery.”

    1. this is my story, except i am the alcoholic & my brother was the one strong angel who saw me through rehab. but it did take him over 5 years of misery, so he says. lol. me, like most budding alcoholics, never saw my habit as a bad thing. only the hangover episodes got me in trouble, as far as i remember. i’d miss work, fail people who wait up for me, get into relationship troubles, but thats all. but little by little, the nightly drinking became drinking when i can. thats when i got into trouble, got kicked off jobs, my girlfriend left, & i was always blaming other people. good thing my tough angel never gave up on me, stood by me through the rehab, then let me live with him for a few months until i was able to stand on my own two feet. after two years, so far so good.

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
