Caller: 26-year old man calling on behalf of his friend
Problem: Heroin addiction
Seeking: Non 12 step, long-term rehab program
Reason(s): Man is worried that his friend is struggling with a heroin addiction and wants to find immediate help before something bad happens to him. He said he realized that his friend was acting different from before, demonstrating a far more lethargic attitude and just not being at gatherings as much anymore. He said, “At first it just became something like, oh hey [name] is not here. We would call and he would not answer; after that happened a few times, we would actually go over to his house to check on him, because as friends, we were concerned. He would have bags over his eyes, his apartment looked like [expletive] and he just looked miserable. I will be honest with you, when we confronted him about the fact that we were concerned for him; we first assumed that it was something like stress at work, an ex-girlfriend or alcohol. You would never ever assume that someone you care about is on heroin.” He said that his friend realizes that something needs to change but is unsure where to start looking for help. He states, “He does not have insurance or a family he speaks to a lot, but he has a lot of good friends, so we will see about pooling money together and getting him the help that he needs to get clean, preferably not the 12 steps, even if it is long term and costs us a lot of money”.
