Man Concerned Wife Abusing Ritalin As Weight-Loss Treatment

Caller: 44-year old man calling on behalf of his wife

    Problem: Ritalin addiction

Seeking: Long term treatment options for Ritalin

Reason(s): The husband is becoming increasingly concerned with his wife’s health, especially because she is actively abusing prescription medication in an attempt to lose weight. He said that his wife has struggled with body image issues for the entirety of her life, but has managed to make decent progress in the last few years. However, he is concerned that Ritalin abuse, done in an attempt to lose weight, has caused his wife serious issues. He said, “I honestly do not know where she got them from – apparently those mommy-and-me places have prescription drugs by the boatload, which you do not really think about, suburban moms peddling drugs with one another.” He noticed a change in his wife’s behavior and became worried that something else might be going on. He said, “When I confronted her, I did not expect her to say something along the lines of prescription drug abuse, I figured she might be purging to lose weight, but nothing like this. “ He is clear that he wants his wife to get help, but also needs help with the underlying body image issues. As a result, he wants to make sure that his wife enters into a long-term treatment option that is able to not only provide help with recovery for drug addiction, but can also help her with any underlying issues regarding her body image.

    1. Seems as if your wife has a difficult time accepting her body; has there been in changes in her body lately? Have you tried to assure her she is fine and healthy just as she is/was, and does not need to change a thing about herself? Good luck on this, women are usually far to hard on themselves with body image.

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
