Caller: 42-year old mom calling on behalf of her teenage daughter
Problem: Valium addiction
Seeking: Rehab program with counseling that specializes in teen addiction
Reason(s): The mother wants to know what the availability is for a long-term, inpatient rehabilitation center for someone struggling with a benzodiazepine addiction. The caller says that her daughter made the switch to valium after having jittery sensations on Xanax. The caller said that her daughter does struggle with anxiety, but its’ currently taking far more than the prescribed dosage in order to deal with the stress of being in high school. The mom said, “I know that she is taking it to deal with the reality of college coming soon, having to leave some friends behind, but both me and her dad did not know just how bad the problem was getting. She told me she has been buying medication from friends at school for months now.” She is worried that her daughter is not only gambling with her physical health, but is also spending a great deal of her savings on buying medication from others. She says, “I realize that it might seem harsh to put your daughter into a rehab program, but clearly there is something else going on here. Clearly she is struggling with some sort of image problem, acceptance, I do not know and I do not really know how to make her confide in me”. She wants to find programs that cater specifically to, or have at least worked with, teenagers that have substance abuse problems.
