Mother Seeking Help On How To Deal With Daughter’s Cocaine Addiction

Caller: 50-year-old mom calling on behalf of 18-year-old daughter

    Problem: Cocaine addiction

    Seeking: Intervention, rehab treatment options

Reason(s): Mom is seeking out treatment options for her 18-year-old daughter. She states that her daughter’s drug problem is tearing their family apart. The caller says that her daughter refuses to seek help, which is the reason that she herself is taking matters into her own hands. She discussed that her daughter began acting very different in the last few months, started spending time with the wrong crowd and has turned into a very different person. She says her daughter rarely comes home, and when she does, it is at the early hours of the morning – looking strung out and unhealthy. Because the mom never took drugs herself, she says it took her a while to figure out what the problem was. When she was cleaning her daughter’s room, she found a straw and CD case with white powder residue on it. Having done the research online, she discovered that her daughter has all the signs of a cocaine abuser. When she tried to discuss the matter with her daughter, she found her daughter very unwilling to discuss the matter. She said her daughter looks emaciated, misses school on a regular basis, can’t hold a part-time job, and is constantly yelling and fighting with her and the family. She admitted, “I don’t believe that she is ready to quit. I am calling because I know she needs help. I know that if someone aside from me talks to her, maybe some sort of family intervention to see what she is doing to herself, and the effects it will have on her in the end, she will accept the help and go to a clinic. She is so young still, with so much ahead of her in life. She needs help.” Provided her with the names of several clinics in her general vicinity for treatment options.

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
