Caller: 25-year old man calling on behalf of his brother
Problem: Alcohol addiction
Seeking: Non-traditional, non 12 step rehab treatment
Reason(s): The caller stated that both he and his brother never saw their mom drink more than two glasses of wine. The man said, “Occasionally pops would have a few beers on St. Patrick’s Day and the Fourth of July, but that was it. Honestly, both parents thought that coke, heroin and pot were all the same thing – ‘dope’. Simply put, there was no encouragement to try anything or experiment.” The caller stated that the freedom created by going to college did not faze him, but his brother was not so lucky. Caller said, “Honestly, he had never been around people that drank, my entire family does not go crazy, even on holidays, so once he got to college and was able to do what he wanted, he just did not know how to control himself it seems. His freshmen year was bad grade wise, but his sophomore year he just stopped going to classes’ altogether because he was sleeping through them. It has gotten to the point where he needs to drink to function, if you try to force him to go without alcohol he simply does not get anything done. He moved back to our parents’ home for a bit, but they kicked him out too because he is disrespectful and a drunk”. He admits that his brother is currently living with him, but only on the condition that they work together to find a solution. Caller made it clear he is seeking a non-traditional alternative recovery program that does not involve the 12-step treatment.
