Caller: 42-year old man calling on behalf of his cousin
Problem: Alcohol and prescription opioid medication
Seeking: Long-term inpatient treatment program
Reason(s): The man is concerned about his cousin’s recent drug use and excessive alcohol consumption. The man understands that young adults may experiment with illicit substances, but is desperately worried that it may lead to long-term injury or even worse. He states, “I have become so worried that I will try to send him a message on WhatsApp just to see if they actually check it, just to know he is not dead or passed out.” According to the man, his cousin already drinks to excess regularly, but has recently started adding prescription opioid medication as well. The man admits that his cousin, nor anyone in the household, has a prescription for these types of pain medications. He also said, “I realize that the combination of those two is not only dangerous, but may even be fatal. You hear about what Amy Winehouse put in her system and all that, and I really do not want him to be another statistic of a lost War on Drugs.” He wants to find an inpatient treatment facility, primarily because this facility offers the option to make long-lasting changes. Moreover, it would ensure that there is no immediate chance of a relapse.
