Caller: 25-year old sister calling on behalf of her brother
Problem: OxyContin (oxycodone)
Seeking: Alternative rehab programs for prescription drug addiction
Reason(s): Sister is concerned that her brother is struggling with a dependence on OxyContin. She suggests that when her brother started training on mixed martial arts at a serious level, he took a bad tumble over two other participants who were sparring and tore his right knee. She said, “I know that he was disappointed when he tweaked his knee pretty bad, but I think it was far worse that he received OxyContin to manage the pain afterwards”. The caller suggests that her brother became frustrated with being unable to do anything and started to experiment with the prescription medication in order to pass the time. Caller said, “You have to understand he has always been competitive, running, weight lifting, football, baseball, and now MMA. When he found out he could not do anything anymore, at least for the time being, I am not sure that he was able to take it.” The caller states that both parents must know that something is happening to their son, but refuse to discuss the proverbial elephant in the room. The caller said, “This is as much about confronting my brother’s OxyContin addiction as it is about making my parents see that there is a serious problem going on – I just need to know how to address it”, and getting information for all of them on any alternative rehab programs for prescription abuse will be very helpful.
