Nephew Using Prescription Medication To Feel Better About His Life

    Caller: 32-year old uncle

    Problem: Nephew’s prescription medication addiction

Seeking: Long term, inpatient rehab options

Reason(s): According to the caller, his nephew’s parents divorced when he was young. After a number of different abusive stepfathers throughout the years, the caller said he realized that his nephew was having a hard time fitting in at school and at home. The caller said, “I would notice that he would spend a lot of time sitting by himself – which I guess is normal for teenagers, but it is not as though he was playing video games or chatting on the Internet, he just sort of hung out by himself”. After hearing that his nephew had been skipping school regularly, he decided to have a talk with him. According to the uncle, “This was around the time that his mother had just gotten a new guy in her life again, so I felt maybe it was time for a man that had been around a long time, to talk to him.” The caller says that after having a heart-to-heart with him, the nephew finally confided that the only time he felt good about himself and his surroundings was when he was using prescription pills. The caller stated, “He said that he always felt he had problems to deal with, countless issues he had to be aware of, and when he took those pills he would just sort of space out and forget about them. However, he did admit that what had become an escape had now become something he HAD to do every day.” The caller wants to know what options are available within a 50-mile radius that would allow for a complete focus on rehab rather than outpatient treatment. “Right now, it might be best if he does get out of his current environment and just focus on being happy, without drugs, clearly he cannot do that in his current environment.”

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
