Wife Concerned About Husband’s Struggle With Alcohol

Caller: 48-year old woman calling on behalf of her husband

    Problem: Alcohol addiction

Seeking: Long term inpatient treatment for alcohol addiction

Reason(s): The wife is fed up with her husband’s alcohol addiction and demands that either he enters into alcohol rehab right away or she is going to get a divorce. The woman states that she knew her husband was a problem drinker, but this has traditionally been a problem that had only negatively affected him. She stated, “I know he has a drinking problem. However, he has a decent job, does not become abusive, overall he is a decent husband. However, in the last month, he has been drinking more than ever for some reason. Now two days ago he hit our garage with his car after getting behind the wheel, plastered. That is the final straw, even if I ignore the thousands of dollars in damage, the fact that he is drinking and driving, endangering others, that is something I cannot and will not stand for.” she realizes that it is unsafe for a chronic alcoholic of more than two decades to stop drinking without professional guidance. She is asking for an inpatient treatment program for alcoholics as soon as possible.

    1. I can very well relate!!! This is the case of my husband as well!!! A sweet, dear & gentle man who becomes a monster, uncaring & abusive when he is drunk 🙁 My kids – all four – love him dearly. The thing is they’re between 15 & 6, all young and already exposed to such harshness. Divorce ain’t the best solution for now, I think, but I’m looking at getting him to Alcoholics Anon or a rehab of something. It’s been over 2 years now that it has become worse. If I didnt do anything or divorced him, it would be downhill. Better smother him with love, support & understanding at rehab, right?

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
