Woman Worried About Husband’s Alcohol Addiction Issues

Caller: 33-year old woman calling on behalf of her husband

    Problem: Alcohol addiction

    Seeking: Inpatient, non 12-step program

Reason(s): The woman is concerned that her husband’s ‘unwinding after work’ has started to become a serious issue. She is concerned that her husband is no longer just having one or two drinks to unwind after a long day, but is currently drinking to excess several nights out of the week, sometimes immediately after coming home. She said, “I am sure that there is a better way for me to express myself, but there is something very frightening about seeing someone you care about going through something like this. There have been days that the first thing he does is toss his shoes off and pour himself a large glass of scotch, enough to where it would be a double or triple in a bar.” She said that after the initial drink, her husband would then switch to beer and occasional hard alcohol shots throughout the night. She said, “He will continue to down beer, several in one night, with the occasional mixer in there. When he is off work during the weekend, he often starts as early as noon and keeps drinking until he passes out.” She makes it clear that she does not want a 12-step program, instead she wants to have an inpatient rehab program where her husband is able to avoid relapse, but also discuss any issues he has that is related to his stress and drinking.

    1. yeap. it all starts there! im reading the same story of my dad, the same story for my brother. drinking starts at the time they wanna hang out, unwind, etc. soon after, the drinking becomes an issue. it won’t be long before the troubles rooted from the alcoholics denial become the cause of relationship breakdowns, divorces, job less, etc. give it time, the drinking ends up with liver cirrhosis, hypertension, stomach & digestive problems, ailing kidneys… who suffers? the one that’s not even drinking. yeap. all that jazz. so familiar!

    Most Insurance Accepted

The traditional 12 step approach looks at drug and alcohol addiction as an incurable disease. This disheartens many and makes people feel as though they are at a constant disadvantage when battling addiction. Non-traditional programs treat drug and alcohol addiction as a serious problem that can be fully addressed and resolved through treatment that is based on science and empirical evidence.
The issue with 12 step programs is that they were the first real drug and alcohol addiction treatment offered to the public. Because many realize that addiction is something that they cannot overcome by themselves, popularity boomed quickly. While the research now shows 12 step programs are almost as effective as doing nothing at all, they are still the first name associated with drug addiction by virtue of "being first."
Not all non 12 step programs are the same, which makes it important to find the right program for you or your loved one. It is important to find a long-term, holistic treatment option that treats each patient as an individual.
It is impossible to determine exactly how much non 12 step treatment costs without knowing more specifics about the prospective patient. Some programs charge more than others do. This again highlights the importance of finding a program that not only meets your needs, but is also affordable. Fortunately, many programs work with a sliding pay scale or allow you to pay for treatment in installments.
This depends on the programs and on your insurance. More and more insurance companies are realizing the need for proper alternative drug treatment and extending coverage. This is due to the better results offered by a holistic approach and the financial benefits of most patients not relapsing.
