Caller: 19-year old woman calling on behalf of her friend
Problem: Synthetic cannabis addiction
Seeking: Treatment options for synthetic cannabis, spice rehab options
Reason(s): The woman is concerned that her friend is struggling with an addiction to synthetic cannabis or ‘spice’. She suggests that her friend might be showing signs of physical and mental dependence and she wants to know what she can do to help. She noticed the remnants of a synthetic cannabis wrapper on her friend’s desk when she was over there. She said, “I already saw that she was acting weird, I just thought that this was typical teenager stuff; like “I have my days where I really do not like people or don’t want to be seen by anyone’… But this was different, her behavior was …off.” According to the caller, her friend readily and even proudly admitted that she smoked synthetic cannabis and that it was not addictive, therefore not harmful. She said, “I argued with her right away, but because she refused to believe me I decided to do a little research of my own. I found that this stuff is clearly dangerous. Because it is imported into the country from China or whatever, I do not think that I would ever trust that stuff in my body.” The woman is concerned that her friend does not see how dangerous her behavior is, nor does she realize that she is possibly damaging her own body. She wants more advice on how to approach the subject and wants to know what else she could do to help her friend find the right treatment centers that could help her.
